This first-ever English translation of Girolamo Zanchi’s Commentary on Philippians highlights his exegetical brilliance, foundational influence on Reformed Christology, and enduring impact on Reformed theology and godly living.
Patrick O’Banion’s translation is a most-welcomed addition to the growing body of literature on union with Christ. In this case, Zanchi’s Spiritual Marriage is unquestionably an old book well worth reading and will provide spiritual edification for the person in the pew, to the pastor, and to the seminary professor.

This treatise is a most edifying and interesting work for which Patrick O' Banion is to be sincerely thanked. O'Banion did not just provide a cursory English translation, but one that involved a tremendous amount of scholarship that clearly shows his devotion to the cause of Christ...
Emeritus Professor, Hendrix College
This fine translation opens a window into the heart and mind of one of Reformed Scholasticism’s most capable champions. We owe a huge debt to Patrick O’Banion for resurrecting Zanchi from the undeserved obscurityo which he has been consigned.
Writer
Modern readers who are used to how-to books and articles might not describe Zanchi’s text as “lively,” as it requires some concentration. If I had to use a couple of adjectives, I would say it is thorough, clear, and thought-provoking. To me, its greatest value is in stimulating discussion of largely unexplored aspects of our union with Christ as our Bridegroom.
Professor Emeritus, Theological School of the Protestant Reformed Churches
The Spiritual Marriage is a careful, sometimes novel, comparison of earthly (in Zanchi’s word, 'carnal') marriage, as the type, with the spiritual marriage of Christ and His church, as the reality of marriage. Although Zanchi does not expressly call attention to it by name, the book is, in fact, an exposition of Zanchi’s and the Reformation’s theology of the covenant of grace.
Professor, Theological University Kampen
This treatise on The Spiritual Marriage of Christ and His Church presents a mature fruit of Zanchi’s reading of Ephesians 5, marrying a careful analysis of the text with an edifying spiritual application to the doctrine of salvation by union with Christ. Patrick O’Banion’s excellent translation transmits to the reader the fresh clarity and rich detail of Zanchi’s argument.
