About

Rooted in Tradition, Dedicated to Excellence

On January 6, 1607, English minister Robert Wilkinson preached one of the most famous wedding sermons of the age. It was published immediately and repeatedly thereafter as “The Merchant Royal.”

Wilkinson focused on the virtuous wife in Proverbs 31:14 who, “like a Merchant’s ship… brings her food from afar.” Noting that the Proverbs 31 woman was a picture of Christ’s church, he wrote that she “commands, and countermands each man… as if she, and none but she were Captain, Owner, Master of the ship. And yet she is not Master, but the Master’s mate; a royal Ship she is, for the King himself takes pleasure in her beauty. And if she is a Merchant’s too, then is she the Merchant royal.”

Following Wilkinson and Proverbs 31, Merchant Royal Press supplies the church with food from afar by publishing works from Christian history. We connect the church of today with the church of the past, providing historical ballast to help her stay afloat and on course amidst the winds and waves of contemporary thought and culture.

We publish works that are orthodox and catholic in theology, edifying in tone, and that bridge the gap between doctrine and piety without sacrificing either. Our theological commitment is to the confessional standards of the Reformed tradition, and we seek, in particular, to be of service to the Reformed church by published works by Reformation and post-Reformation orthodox theologians.
